Yes I am finding that out so I think he’s off the list. Thank you!!Hi christie and welcome, your list looks very thourough but one thing stands out for me and that is the harlequin shrimp,as from my understanding they only eat star fish so unless you give it star fish to eat it will starve, some keep chocolate chip star fish in the sump and cut a leg off now and then or buy asterina star fish either live or frozen and maybe it will try eat your sand sifting star fish ?
Thank you!!Welcome to R2R
Thank you so much!! I will scratch them both from the list!Hello and welcome!
As mentioned the Harlequin shrimp are hard to keep fed, they really aren’t great animals for home reef aquaria. Even if you have a severe asterina problem, they will eat them all within a few weeks. There is nothing worse than seeing a fairly active shrimp just sitting still in the same spot because it’s slowly starving to death and trying to conserve energy. They really should be left in the wild.
One other thing that stands out from your stocking list is the blue spot jawfish. They are not a tropical species (they come from sub-tropical waters). Keeping them at temps above 75° will lead to significantly shorter life spans (like a year or less vs. a decade or more).
But otherwise your list looks great and really well thought out! Looks like it’s going to be a pretty epic build!
Hi everyone
I had a reef tank about 15 years ago. I finally got the kids raised and out of the house. My husband recently bought a 51’ Chevy truck as his hobbie so I have decided to get a reef tank. We are fixing to start building our new house so I have about 7 months to research and prepare. I am thinking I just want a fish, softie and LPS tank. Below is what I’m thinking so far. Please feel free to make any suggestions or offer any advice. Thank you you in advance!

Yes that has been suggested. I did do a lot of research on the mandarins and planned on using Algae Barn. I am really good at doing research and certainly do not want to kill anything. Before I get one I will make sure I can care for them. I’m the one that can’t stand to go to SeaWorld because I can’t handle that they are kept in such small tanks my daughter works at Texas State Aquarium and has a bachelors in marine biology so I have a go to if I need help plus now I have you guys!Welcome! Glad you joined.
If you haven't yet found it, then this is a great reference book type article:

Many mandarins starve. Concern for the mandarin (and even diamond goby) given all the planned good eaters, so this is a useful supplemental feeder:
Thanks PaulB- Mandarin feeder
Just completed my Mandarin feeder after PaulB design. My Mandarin is currently fat and happy but wanna make sure she stays that way..I owe it to her after killing a couple 20 years ago when I first started this hobby and not having a clue for there needs. They have always been one of my favorite...www.reef2reef.com
Even though you are in planning stage, this may be a great time to start your build thread, because what you've listed above could just be moved over into Member Aquariums Forum area as a new thread.
Have you considered starting your build thread? I found its a great place to document my tank's evolution for myself. I started tank first then joined, so I'm still finding myself going back collecting pictures & updating historically as well as current state. Once you create your first post in your thread and link it to your account, they will give you build badge (look left, under my ID)
