I purchased a Yellow Watchman Goby and Pistol Shrimp Monday. Both are very well today. My concern is the goby. He has been swimming at the top of my tank (20g peninsula) for a few hours. Looks like he is playing in the current like my clownfish do. Before this he was on the sand bed like normal. Should I be concerned? From what I’ve read, that is not typical behavior. Any advice would be appreciated.

In my experience, Yellow Watchman Gobies largely hug the bottom. If one is up in the current, pointing into the flow, that can be an indication of disease such as Velvet.

Just in case, could you post a 30 second video of this fish's behavior using the brightest, whitest lights you have, turning all the blue down for clarity? It's best if you can first upload your video to YouTube, and then link it back here as some R2R members have issues with imbedded videos.

Then, we could ask one of the R2R #fishmedic team to take a look and offer a diagnosis and treatment plan going forward 🙂

Best of luck!

Watchmen hide in rocks, so if they don't hang in the rocks I usually suspect either no rocks or not enough rock or there is a bully. Pictures or a short video would help

Pictures or videos can help us figure out what might be wrong with your goby!
Did you qt the goby?
Where did you get it from?

My yellow watchman does this if he can’t find his pistol shrimp. A couple of times the shrimp has moved to a new cave, and the watchman didn’t notice for a day or so. Once he notices, he spends the next two days frantically searching the top of the tank. He usually finds the shrimp on day 3.
