I setup and cycled this QT about two months ago. It is bare bottom with a few pieces of dry rock rubble and a single piece of live rock rubble. I recently (1 week ago) added in a pair of clownfish and the PVC elbows.

Today after feeding them some pellets (you can see them in the picture) I saw this odd growth or lump of something. It seems to have some pellets stuck in it. Could it be from the pellets I am feeding them? There is another patch of this stuff along the front glass in a line, but it is no where as large as what is pictured. You can also see some sort of flat matting going on in the background of the photo.

About a day after adding the fish the brown flecks appeared all over the elbows. I figured that was just something I would have to deal with having a "new tank". I am not sure what it is either, but I wasn't as alarmed about it as the other.

Maybe I am just freaking out about nothing, but I figured I would run it by you guys first.

Thanks!

Pic isn't showing!
The brown specks you mentioning might be algae.

The tank doesn't have any odd odor. I figured the specs were just algae or something. Prior to doing a large water change before adding the clowns, the water was a bit cloudy. I figured it was just the tank being new and the mini skimmer breaking in.

Do you think it is ok to remove the lumps of crud?

Thank you all! I left them alone with a "sitter" over the weekend and I know there was probably leftover food that wasn't taken out. I just hadn't ever seen anything quite like this in a freshwater tank. Thanks!

I would remove the lumps of crud. It kind of looks like bacteria feeding and growing off of whatever pellets are leftover from when you feed. I agree that the flecks on the pvc are probably some sort of algae.

its funny. bacteria works differently in salt.
