I have seen in a couple different threads involving unexplained fish death, people asking if there was an essential oil diffusers near the tank.

By this, I assume then that the two do not mix in a good way.

My question then, is in what proximity is this an issue? Same room, floor of the house, building?

I don't subscribe to the health nonsense of the stuff, I just like the smell, so it's not a big deal if I have to junk it.

Not in any way a scientific answer, so take this as my intuition / common sense alone, but if you were (for example) 5 rooms away from the oil diffuser, standing right next to your tank, and can smell the oil, then to me the oil can ‘land’ in your water just as easily as it can descend on your nose. So that would be a no-go scenario.

That makes a lot of sense. Pretty darn obvious when I think about it. That's what happens after I spent the last 12 hours working in, around or on aquariums. Fries the noggin'.
