Okay to use this heater?

Don’t know when, where or how.. but just noticed this while giving my mixing bin and components a rinse. Could’ve been like this awhile, could’ve just happened. It’s generally only used for a day or two while mixing up new saltwater. The inside glass around the coils is broken, outside is totally fine. Should I assume keeping best practice of not submerging the plastic cap would make this fine for now?

I wouldn't use it. If you only use it for mixing, get one of those preset heaters. Like the Aqueon ones, $20ish. Cheap piece on mind.

I don't think your supposed to heat water while mixing it, at least I remember reading that. Also unless your doing a huge change heating really isn't necessary IME. My mixing station is in the basement and the temps are mid 60s and have never cause any issues.

Oh I didn’t know that. I’m in my basement too. I just figured it mixes better heated and then it’s at temp when I add it back. I’ll study up on that. I only ever do 5-10-15 gal variations at a time into a total vol of 75. Well, I’ll see if anything really cares that much next WC before I bother with a replacement.

Heaters are relatively cheap, especially for a mixing station.

Absolutely no reason to take the risk, just replace it.

I would not risk it either.

As for heating water while mixing salt, when I've mixed salt I've always heated the water at the same time. I'm not sure why it would not be okay to do this.

At the very least, it’s a nice touch for my animals; clam especially.

ill be the one... i would use it... only for mixing.

And i was always taught to heat when mixing to ensure everything dissolves and to prevent temp swings at WC.

that is literally what i do with my old heaters and pumps after replacing them in the DT. So as long as there is no risk of leakage or shock, they get thrown into my MIX bucket for use as needed. Last pump I threw out, was a MaxiJet where the internal "goop" had finally cracked so I didnt want to risk electrocution.
