One Last Shot....

Hello Reefers

Finally things are in place to get going with my one last build. This was ideally supposed to be around March this year, but things on the house renovation got delayed and so did the build. But before that.. Little bit on me and my past two tanks

My name is Sameer and I work as a chief engineer at sea. So at present my work keeps me away for 3 months and then I am on vacation for 3 months. All thanks to wife who looks after the tank when I away at sea and it’s because of her that I can think of having a saltwater tank.

Been in this hobby since 2014, and have had two tanks in the past. One being a 60g set up from 2014-mid 2018 and then a 150g from 2019 till the last quarter of 2021. The 60g was basically an experimental tank to see if i could sustain the hobby given profession the limited resources available. It also took the maximum brunt of my mistakes and taught me a lot along the way. But given all the mistakes i did with regards to water changes, dosing, filtration , adding fish randomly i am happy and somewhat lucky not to lose a single fish due to any disease/fights. The only mortality i had was a percula clown that jumped out. Somehow corals were not that lenient all the time and kept me on my toes.

Somewhere in February 2017 i joined this forum *** learning platform and by the mid of 2018 ‘Upgrade Bug’ made me rehome my 60g which is doing duty as a qt tank since then at a friend’s place.

Six month break proved useful in terms of learning and getting more insight on the hobby before the 150g was set up. Even though everything was planned nicely for this build, unfortunately this set up had to be brought down in a short span as I had to take up the house maintenance urgently (reasons beyond my control). Let’s leave that for some other day.

Carrying out repair work meant shutting down the tank, so instead of doing patch work we decided on entire house renovation and get done with it. So the planning, design and execution took good 4-5 months and before starting the work sold off the 150g along with the livestock. Retained some of the equipment to be used for the new build.

This time for the new set up decided to go with a plug and play type system and the foray of Cade made decision easy. The only other option was Redsea, but the way regional RedSea distributor responds here, it would have taken me ages to get one.

Cade arrived in January 2022 and was in the warehouse till June. Meanwhile i gathered other related stuff to avoid any further delays during the build. Some items carried forward from the older one and some purchased new.

Although i plan to start slow with FOWLR , the stuff purchased is suitable for reef as well going ahead(if i change my mind). I am also listing the price of each equipment that’s purchased new in 2022 and also quoting the prices of the equipment that i will be carrying over from the old tank and their respective prices in the market when I got them and their prices post pandemic.

Please note that the INTENT IS PURELY to have an overview of costing across the globe.

1. Tank, sump, stand and plumbing: Cade S21500- 60” x 27” x 24” – 3020$
2. Lights: Ati 6 Bulb Hybrid Power module wifi dimmable in black. – 1880$
3. Return pump: Maxspect Turbine Duo 12k- ( was 241$, now 322$) & Mantis 10k pump( was 134$, now 167$)
4. Wavemakers:
a) Maxspect Gyre MJ-Gf 4k ( 140$)
b) Reef Octopus Octo Pulse 2(old)- 150 pounds.
c) Coral Box QP 16 Plus x 2 – purchased used ones for 50$
5. Skimmer(old) : Tunze 9410DC- was 348$ now 523$
6. Chiller(old) : Teco Tk1000 - ( was 1046$, now 1342$)
7. Rocks: Dutch Reef Rocks (604$ for 60kgs) and Caribsea Reef Tree kit. (308$)
8. Sand : Blue Treasure Argonite sand. 1-2mm (150$ for 60kgs)
9. Salt : Tropic marin or Instant Ocean (depending on availability)
10. Dosing pump (old): Kamoer f4 ( i think only the f4 pro is available now for 281$)
11. Bio Media: Mantis bricks(old), Maxspect Bio balls, Sera siporax , and ATI granulated activated carbon ( don't remember the exact prices )

I have tried my best to limit the brands that are available with the regional distributors/retailers. Just doing my bit to support them and the hobby.

Requesting you all to join me along this build journey and make this one last build a memorable one .

Open to any kind of suggestions/ inputs / criticism so please feel free.

Will post the build pictures as the journey progresses

Thanks and Regards

Congrats on the new tank. It took me six friends and two cases of beer to get my CADE 1800 in also. :anguished-face:

Good luck with the endeavor!

Any updates?
Thanks for stopping by...

Yeah the fill went smoothly and the tank went into cycling till December 2022. Traditional cycling method by adding a small piece of shrimp and some fish food occassionally.

For this tank , i have decided not to hurry and add any corals for atleast 7-8 months. Just added few fish and one long tentacle anemone( gt it for free:p )so that i can get some bio load running and let the tank go through its ugly phase at its own pace .

Meanwhile changed some equipment like took out coral box wave makers and added gyres xf350 mounted vertically. Added an old Octo Pulse 2.

So now by June when i get back home will start adding some corals and start the reefing journey.

Here are some shots taken in between from Dec 2022 till March 2023 . Pls ignore the unwanted noise in the videos. Apologies.
