Orange Coralline?

My tank is young and I don’t have much in the way or coralline algae yet, but the frag plug on my hammer has become a very interesting orange with purple on top. Is there orange coralline or is this something else?

I'd be inclined to think it's an "or something else", maybe a different coral, or a sponge or something.

:face-with-tears-of-joy: Is it a neon orange color? I have had spots of them pop up and then be overrun by other coralline. I’m not sure what it is. It is calcified it feels like. I have spots of this show up I’d say once a month or so. It is gorgeous. No idea what it is.

It is definitely more on a neon color, and yeah, it is gorgeous. I just saw it starting to pop up a little on another rock!

Yeah but the only reason I don’t think it’s something else is that there’s purple coralline encrusting over it. Look at the picture. Cuz at first I thought the same thing, maybe it’s a sponge. But have you ever seen a sponge or coral get crusted over?

Mmm. Not sure if I buy what your selling but maybe - haven’t had a mass coralline die off they are striking bands of neon, but they do get overtaken. Which. I guess could be new coralline running over the dead. Not sure.

Coralline algae comes in many different colors, including orange, but I know that it can brightly fluoresce as a result from stress. On my tank if I turned off the return pump for too long while doing a large water change I would have a bright orange strip on the top of the back glass of the tank where the coralline was out of the water too long. It would then turn white, but get covered back over by the normal purple/pink coralline in a relatively short amount of time.

I’d be interested in seeing if what is on the OP’s frag plug stays fluorescent orange.

Hope it stays orange for you because it is beautiful. Just wish mine would hurry with the pink and purple
