Whats the most overrated thing in the hobby? is it a skimmer a coral, or mabye even a tang?

Some things are underrated but others are over rated so give us your opinions.

I'm going to go w/ lighting in general

Simply because it seems anytime anyone posts an issue and reasonable parameters, it's almost automatic that there is advice to change up lighting.

We had a dude the other day who had his tank up less than 2 weeks, running into issues with corals (obviously), and getting advice to upgrade his lights! :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

I’m a very new reefer, only about a year into it, but I still haven’t vibed with the premium price tag on aesthetic equipment. There is a degree of so called “conspicuous consumption” in this hobby, vs freshwater. It can be hard to parse out what is truly necessary, since people who pay high prices will usually try to justify their habits as necessary. Which is understandable. The waters just get muddied a bit on a sweet spot for “value.”

A lot of overlap with guitar playing in that way, my other hobby.

Par meters, even though useful seem way too expensive to me for what they are.

This is an actual good example. PAR meters are virtually useless for what people think they are using them for. It does not matter what the price is. It is an almost universally recommended and misunderstood tool in this hobby. Its benefit is almost universally overrated by participants in this hobby.

You folks are all pointing things out that you don't find value in.. but if those things are selling, then somebody does find value in them, or they would not be buying them....
Agree, but the thread asks what do you find overrated, so it's purely an opinion thread, and in my opinion highly priced corals are overrated :)
