I am planning to paint the back side of my tank black. What type of paint have people used.

I was thinking about using a flat black from Rustoleum.

I've painted with common household latex paints, epoxy paints and spray can enamels. The spray enamels have by far been the best. Krylon Fusion (Lowes/HD for $5) in spray enamel is my first choice.

Avoid matte or textured finishes because they create excessive drag on your magnetic algae scrubber.
Use multiple thin coats, THIN coats!

I painted a Marineland tank a few years back with roll on rustoleum. Turned out great! Use painters tape to keep it off the sides and plastic if it has a rim.

I would do something that you can remove easily later. I have seen other comments on here but can't remember the product they used.

I glued black posterboard to mine but I know there are much better options. Hopefully someone will chime in.

Plastidip does peel off easy. Any enamel will do, rater than do coat after coat to get good coverage, turn the tank so that whatever pane you are painting is up, put some 2+ inch painters tape around the edge so that you have walls that stick up above the pane of glass and just pour it on and spread it around.... works GREAT for good coverage with a nice solid coverage and the back is smooth so that if you run a magnetic algae scraper it doesn't risk messing up the paint.

I understand both sides of the argument for using something removable. However in my case, if I'm painting the back I want it to LAST. Enamel paints can be removed by scraping with a razor blade. It's a lot of work and a time consuming task. It's also nearly impossible to get all the paint off the exposed silicone seam.

I just painted the back of a 7ft. 210gal. Purchased Rust-Oleum flat black from Home Depot and it came out perfect. Used about half the can.

I use construction paper from stationery section of Walmart at 92 cents and 30”x 30” and holds up well against moisture. This way if next owner doesn’t want it- easy removal

This is the one I was thinking of. Its has 2 overflow sections so I will always be against a wall and I will never have a need to see through it or remove it.

If you want something that can take a few bumps without scratching than krylon fusion is the way to go!!

I used latex paints, and they peeled too easy. Any little bump would cause a "scratch".

I used this primer on the bottoms of my frag tanks. Dries nice and hard, and only needed two coats.
