So I got a used apex2016 from a friend a few days back. The unit can’t find WiFi signals so I have to use it wired Ethernet. Well sense the unit is out of warranty I decided to paint the unit to match my other equipment
I took the unit apart to where all I had was the shell. I used flat black plasti dip spray paint. The plasti dip can be peeled off if I ever get rid of the unit

I love plasti dip. I’ve done a lot of car and trucks wheels. Certain sprays take some learning but otherwise it’s a great DIY product!

SO much nicer than the gawdawful orange! My Apex is hidden under my tank so it doesn’t really matter, but I still don’t know what Apex was thinking with the color. If they were to start selling an apex in black (or any other color for that mater) I can guarantee you the orange ones would just sit on the shelf.

Humm, the orange is still there guys. He painted over the silver ;) It does look nice though.

Yeah, you're right! I was thinking the body was orange rather than silver. For some reason it still looks better, though. Maybe it makes us think of halloween!

If you ever sell it.. I would not remove the black. I think it looks way more desirable.

The fake plastic silver paired with orange is hideous.

Looks good. Did you take any pics of how you took it apart?
Just unscrew the 3 Philip on the back. Then pull the top side apart first. Do to there are 3 plastic clips on the inside of the bottom.

Then when you get the top cover off be careful of the 2 wire harness that are connected to the top cover

the small one on the left has a black flap that pull down and that releases the ribbon cable. The right connection just pulls up

then there are 2 screws with orange flaps that hold the board in please to the back cover. Unscrew them

the green box shows where the cover wires connect to the board. After unscrewing the board clips gently pull the fan up on the right side of the board, it’s held on by a light glue. The board will pull right up and off the back cover now and ready for cleaning and painting.
Now for the top.

the two components in these boxes will pull up fairly easy with a flat head. They are held on with a little bit of glue or the plastic was melted. I used super glue to glue these back in place when reassembling the unit. Make sure to take the clean Neptune icon off before painting so you don’t paint it. It’s located under the orange cover. When reassembling the unit the aqua bus cover plate can be a bit tricky. So be gentle and don’t force it in place

The brain is just 2 screws on the back and comes apart fairly easy. Just like the ed832 be careful with the wire harness for the Neptune logo display. It looks the exact same as the one on the eb832

Just unscrew the 3 Philip on the back...
Thanks for the step by step. When you were in there, did you look to see how hard it would be to remove the orange parts and paint them?
