I am picking up an older ATI Sunpower and am thinking of painting it.

Has anyone here painted aluminum before?

I have found I need to wash it, sand it (80 or 120 grit), use a self etching primer, and then paint it with a few coats.

Any other tips or tricks to make sure it looks good and stays on?

IME the etching and the aluminum-specific primer are the keys. Also, it the metal gets hot then don't be surprised by some off gassing of the paint.

I figured once it’s all painted and done, I will run it I my garage or shed to let it get hot.

Think I’ll need to use a high heat paint?

I’ve also considered checking around to have it powder coated
