I only wanted low nutrients, not ultra low.

In the previous tank I kept, the nutrients were often out of control. Despite running ATS, GFO, cutting back on feeding and increasing vinegar and dosing bacteria. Hence with this tank, I embarked on zeovit to help me keep the nutrients low but not to the point where the corals look so pale. (Didn't know they would get this pale!)

What happened to your previous tank and what do you mean by “out of control”? How were your sps? If they were suffering I doubt it was caused by the higher nutrients. I bet the controlling methods were stressing them. But that’s just a guess from my experience. All of my acros started surviving and thriving as soon as I stopped interfering.

Are you using Zeolites? They could also pull down trace, which is fairly common to dose back into the system, specifically K, but perhaps others. While I agree with the pale, pastel is a bit different, and also have a metallic sheen, not observed above. A FTS might also help, especially seeing contrasts of color. Maybe as it relates to Zeovit, more info on products and dosage may assist.

My issue with the system and the approach is #1 cost, but if you really step back and use logic, why take out, only to put back in? Bacteria self regulates, given proper surface area, corals feed, but aminos and proteins in foods to fish, then SPS food. Zeolites pull ions, that too need a replinsh. These systems do work, but again, really not needed, and very hands on. I would bet that if hair algae were to break, too fast, might have to deal with something else, possibly worse, won't dare say the word, but been there, done that, lol.

What are you using to supplement alk, ca, and mg? I would get target k up to 400, then consider balling, this would take care of all trace, might yield desired colors. Remember zeolites pull on trace, water change alone may not suffice :)

Well the good news is your sps are still alive. Curious to know how high your previous levels were. The hair algae and cyano could of been caused by interference/products as well. Here’s my no3 and po4 today

Hi guys,

I got a few frags of corals. They are all encrusting but the colors have somewhat gone pale. They are in my tank for about a month.

Cal: 500 (overdosed once, letting it slowly come down)
KH: 7.5 (KH kept stable by Alkatronic)
Mag: 1350
Nitrate: undetectable on salifert kit
Po4: 0.02 (tested with hanna 774)
Potassium: 340 (slowly bumping this up)

System is running on zeovit. I believe my nitrate isn't 0 as I have some hair algae growing in the crevices of my rocks.

Should I be concerned with the pale colors of the corals ? Like the red stag coral I have, it's getting paler and showing some white tips, however it's also encrusting.

Another example is the SSC frag I got, it just totally went pale but I can see polyps extending and tissue on the coral.

his Kh is perfect. It's his N&P levels that are causing this. And that it's Zeovit.

I'm using TLF C-Balance, however I'm only dosing part 2 which is the alk portion only as Calcium is too high. Want it to reach about 420 then I will start dosing equal dose. Mg is replenished with every water change, dont see the need to dose yet.

Turn your light down, bump up the nutrient a bit and reacclimated the corals to brighter lights slowly after having stable nutrient levels.

Now I'm no expert on nutrient level guldines, because it find it to much more of an art than a science.... But I do know that if they are too low corals will look like yours do. My methods for increasing nutrients are increasing my livestock, increasing feeding, and stopping carbon dosing and gfo use.

What I see at the picture, you recently started.
The phosphates in the zeovit system mean that your zeolites are not working as expected. I switched from zeovit to Tropic Marin a year ago, but I never had phosphate with zeolites.
In the initial stages, especially when starting the cycle, there should be algae, but then they pass. How did you get through the cycle phase? What time is it? The zeovit instructions say that as soon as you have phosphate and nitrate at 0, the start-up cycle is over and you can plant the first corals, but it does not say that they should look like wow.
The Zeovit system is a very moody system. Try to consult with zeovit.com.
Try to dose Zeobak and Sponge Power more often and check the flow passing through the zeolites (better less than more).
To begin with, stabilize the water parameters, let the calcium drop to the level of 400 and raise the potassium to 400 as well. In the ULNS, this is the same critical parameter as calcium.
Zeovit system at the beginning is very unstable, and you most likely will not get the beauty you are counting on. But as soon as it works, you will feel and see it.
I think that someday I will return to this system.
