Hi ,

Currently am using a gyre 130 , a small jebao pp4 and 2 8 year old tunze 6055 for flow in my 30 in x 30 in x 18 in fully acro dominated tank .
Being 30 in in width , I still feel I do not have enough flow. Adding another gyre will be great but was looking at the amazing panta rhei ecm 42 .
So question is - can I use just the gyre and a panta rhei ecm 42 to provide flow replacing so many power heads ?how do you guys like the panta rhei for those who use it .

Regards,
Abhishek

I'm using Vortechs personally, but I recently got to meet Jason Fox and hear him discuss his systems. He uses Panta Rhei power heads and spoke very highly of them for their flow and quality. He uses them in all of his systems.

Buddy of mine has the 42. Pretty standard stuff, frankly; less flow than I get from my vortech 60. The ECM63, however, seems a whole different animal.

How would you compare it to an MP40? Not sure it was ever meant to compete with an MP60.

I find the MP40 to be rather wimpy. Not done a side by side comparison, but I'd give the edge to the 42. It's nice, just not the 63 (and priced accordingly)

Thanks for that. I wouldnt expect that a 3000gph pump would be comparable to a 7500 gph pump. Wish there was something between the 42 and the 63. Maybe a ECM 52.5! Either way I think my tank is too short for the 42 so I'll stick with Tunze, Maxspect, or Ecotech.

Did you end up with the ECM 42? If so, how did it work in your 30x30 tank? was it overkill? How much did you have to dial it back if any?

I tested it out in my 30x30 and then a 50inch x 40 inch tank. Biggest issue has been the fact that its laminar flow and is designed to carry water over long distance . Its pointless in a tank as wide and as short only upto 50 inches like mine.
If I had a tank over 6 feet long , I think ECM42 will be amazing .

I tested the new tunzes stream 3 and with the flow rectifier, it produces a strong laminar flow current ! I love it so much that I have 3 in my new build .

Abhishek

Reviving a very old thread of mine !!!
Am now officially owner of 3 ECM 42s that roar my tank !!!

However , question for all panta rhei users especially @Rick.45cal - do you
Know if you can install the ECM 42s in the overflow ? Meaning whether the outer magnet is safe in water ?

The reefs.com user says it was installed in the overflow :- https://reefs.com/2015/08/24/review-the-panta-rhei-ecm-42/

Anyone ?

Even if it's not, on a 1/4" overflow you could use just about any magnet on the back side.

@Abhishek do you have three ECM 42 standards or Pros? How long is the span you are asking them to push?

Well am only looking at 5 feet . Am amazed at the construction of these pumps and so small a device ! I chose them for their laminar flow and the stream is crazy strong !
No crazy modes - just a magnetic dial that changes the speed .

8 feet and you might be looking at the 63 or the pro version of 42. I only got the regular ones .

Even if it's not, on a 1/4" overflow you could use just about any magnet on the back side.

Well wanted to know if the outer magnet is safe and well protected so that when I put it in my overflow , it won’t corrode .

you have a link for the silicone jacket you are talking about ?

I don't have one in mind but it would be easy to get aquarium silicone, and a silicone mat people put pumps on to quiet them, and cut or fold it up and seal the magnet inside, kind of like a burrito.
