Peppermint Shrimp and Tonga Nassarius Snails

Hello all,

I have a question that needs to be addressed. Are tonga nassarius snails attracted to eating Peppermint Shrimp?

Reason being, I've been through several (and I mean SEVERAL) peppermint shrimp from different LFS and I always loose them to these snails. If there lies any information regarding this please let me know before I loose my mind...lol

I have never heard of tonga snails attacking shrimp before. I know they will eat them if they are found dead on the sand/tank bottom.
Have you seen the snails attack?
How long have you been able to keep the shirmp alive prior to them becoming 'food'?

They stay alive for like a week. I actually watched them corner the shrimp one at a time and consume it while alive.

Should I just switch to nudis to remove the aptasia?

The nudis work better in my opinion but have less characture thann shrimp :smile:
You might also try directly feeding your snails....maybe with full tummies they will not go after your shrimp....maybe.
I can't believe the shrimp couldn't get away....but those tongas are faster than your average snail.

I've never seen my snails after my peppermints. Peppermints were way better form of aptasia control than nudis were. In my experience.

Strange, I have peppermint and a bunch of nass snails and a few other types of snails as well. I have never seen the snails try to get the shrimp, and the shrimp if healthy enough should easily get away from a snail.

Well I shall definitely try one more time. Peppermints are pretty cheap too.

I have not seen our nass's go after our shrimp, though the peppermints are a bit on the reclusive side, so I rarely see more than 1 or 2 of them at any given time... we've got several different types of nassarius, including 3 or 4 tongas... will keep an eye on those rascals though, cause they can be fast movers for snails (we have named the largest one Amtrak and he lives up to his moniker...)
