I stopped by my local petco and saw a big anemone. Do you think it is a good idea buying one from petco? I have never got any saltwater fish/corals from petco. I dot qt corals I just dip them in Coral ReVive for 10 min. Can I dip an anemone for ich, velvet, etc? Does this nem look healthy?

Thanks

Looks like a long tentacle anemone. Looks to be decently healthy best I can tell. It may or may not change color with proper lighting. I’ve bought plenty of BTAs and LTAs with no issue in the past, so if it looks good, I’d have no issue buying from Petco.

I honestly don’t know the dip question and will let someone with more experience answer that. I will say I’ve never dipped an anemone before.

Ok. I also thought it looked healthy. If I do get it hopefully my light will help it. Maybe someone else can help with the dip question.

Thanks

No to dips for anemones people use cipro for bacterial issues with carpet anemones. Lta like this just temp acclimate and put on bottom glass clear sand around the area first turn off flow let attach for 2 hours and then slowly push sand back around it’s foot needs 3 inches. Then turn flow back on make sure it’s attached first.

Ok so no dip. Without quarantining it what is the best way to prevent pests like ich. Would the cipro work?

This type of nems only lives in sand? Or rock

it’s different for each petco it’s really about how good the CAL (Animal manager) and Aquatics specialist are. personally the petco near me is fantastic they order an amazing variety of saltwater fish and they even have coral and beautiful anemones
Every thing looked great except for one hippo blue tang. That had him in a tank my himself self and said under observation

Yes only sand for lta they sometimes attach between rock and sand but always at the bottom unless you use a cup and add sand to it but they grow fast and don’t know if it would be easy to change cups. No theres no way to prevent ich with anemones unless you had a qt specifically set up for it before hand and it’s been running like I reef for a long time. The risk of ich or anything with anemones is very minimal don’t add the petco water with the anemone just gently grab it without squeezing and put it in.

Ok sounds good. You said it grows fast and gets big. How big? Is there enough room in my tank?

Is the risk of ich on nems minimal because the ich can’t attach to it?

Not to be a buzzkill, @Reef Devils , but I don't think you or your tank are ready for an anemone. They require long term stability, strong lighting and can sting/ damage other creatures in the tank. I would keep researching and give your tank more time to stabilize and be successful before adding a new challenge.

My rescue tank from petco.
LTA in right corner.
Paid $5 for it.
5 years later and still going.
They HAVE to bury their foot so keep that in mind.

They sell a lot of Atlantic Anemones, for me it’s been hit or miss with them since they will shed, and die, when unhappy with the handling. Pacific Anemones, have been no problems, other than them taking over the tank. BTW, pick up some Silversides, to get your Anemone off to a healthy start.

Nema are the one big SW fish/invert I wish PetCo did not carry in store. They do not have the correct lighting in store to support nems. Almost every time I see a BTA it is bleached from lack of light. I love getting fish from Petco but not nems and they should not carry them in store. I did once find a HUGE green BTA that had just arrived at a PetCo the day before I bought it. Was in great shape and condition. At any other store that BTA would have gone for $200-300 because of the size. Unfortunately, the first night I had the Nem he walked into a powerhead with a NEM guard, but it still damaged his foot and he died.
