Ph8's 225 build

Ive been having having issues with my QT lately, I do 100% water change get it back to normal and within 3 days I have pea soup. Its driving me nuts cause its worthless to QT fish that you can't see to observe. Ive torn the whole tank down, cleaned everything, changed all media and 3 days later pea soup. I thought it was the window behind the tank causing this, so I blacked out the back and try and keep the blinds shut but no help at all. Thoughts, help anyone?

That's crazy. How is the QT set up? Any liverock, sponge or anything? Have you tried adding water from your display when you do water changes? Just grabbing at straws here I'm stumped too.

Its just an aqua clear HOB with a sponge from my display. Ive tried new water and water from the display. I could seriously do 5 gallon water changes daily and it would never ever be clear and get greener by the day. There are a couple fish in there and they don't seem to be bothered by it but I hate having fish in a green tank and it doesn't look good when people come over either. It looks like I take zero care of the tank when in reality Ive changed more water in the 20g QT than in the 225 in the last month.

We use an AquaClear 70 on our QT and have found that we get the best results using 2 sponges instead of 1. I normally do a water change every two weeks and rinse the sponges in the water I remove from the tank. If I see built up detritus under the basket, I will take the AquaClear offline and clean it thoroughly. I don't use bleach if fish are in QT, but will clean it with peroxide and rinse it with RO/DI. I also add a bit of Microbe Lift Special Blend to the sponges before placing them back in the basket. The only time I have ever had an issue with algae was after a 10 day erythromycin treatment. I did my normal cleanup/water change routine and replaced the sponges w/seeded ones from the DT and haven't had an issue since.

Terry, I tore the QT completely down and cleaned it with a mild bleach mixture. I think I'll take your advice and do s bigger filter with two sponges when I set it back up. Thanks for the advice!

Well its been a while since an update. Despite the tank spotlight last month times have been rough going. Slacking in my QT regiment, I introduced Ich and had a pretty bad outbreak followed by some dumb decisions on my part. I lost probably about half my fish (pretty much all my favorite ones). I was pretty bummed out for a while but its been almost two months and Ive had time to let it go and regroup. The tank was completely torn down cause it really was the only way to get all the fish out but I did a lot of much needed cleaning around and under the rocks so I guess it wasn't all a bad thing. The tank is still fish less at this point, I will cautiously start restocking here in the next month but Im not in any hurry, just taking it easy. Im still trying to clean up and get things back to normal but the corals are all doing pretty well at this point. Ill post some pictures as I get things pretty again.

Wow Brett, sorry to hear this man! Sorry for your losses too. Same boat here, but working slowly too on getting everything back on track from ich, alk drop and nitrate spike. Glad your corals are good.

Brett, We are so sorry about your fish losses and feel your pain. It is good to see you updating your thread again and we are glad to hear your corals are doing well. Looking forward to seeing you at MACNA next week!

Thank you M&T, other than not having any fish in it I'm getting really close to having it looking normal again. I'm really excited about MACNA and meeting both of you.

sorry to hear about the losses bro. but glad things are somewhat getting back to normal. I'm sure that building the fish list will spark some excitement back esp after MACNA.

Sorry to hear about the losses Brett, but glad to hear that you're back on track. Best of luck with the restocking!

Brett sorry as well buddy. There is no doubt in my mind that you will have it better than ever soon! MACNA = can't wait to see you as well and everyone else!

Thanks Scott, I can't wait to see some fish in there again.

Yep, only way to go fallow is to catch all the fish and unfortunately that's what I had to go through to catch them all. I know people have different feelings about Ich and how to deal with it but having experienced it from both sides of the equation multiple times I choose to run an ich free tank.

The tank has come along way since that picture, I'll post some current shots tomorrow.

WOW Brett, I just read through your build and another, and I gotta say. The tank is awesome. I'm sorry to hear about the ich outbreak though. I know it's hard to lose favorite fish. I'll be looking forward to see how the redone tank comes along.

Agree 100 % Brett. Wouldn't do it different.
