I'm starting a 65 gallon mixed reef tank. I'll be using a RS Reefer 300 skimmer, two RS Reef Waves, Reef Mat 500, media reactor, ATO, and AWC (changing out a gallon or two per day slowly throughout the day). I've got three 40 gallon reservoirs in an adjacent storage room providing the RO/DI water, fresh saltwater, and wastewater. I'll be using the Red Sea doser at least to begin with when corals go in, possibly moving to Neptune Trident and Dos in the future. I've got one Radion XR30 8.5 inches above the water. Also creating a 10 gallon pod farm to keep a steady population at hand and supplement feeding.

Sounds like a sweet setup. Have you purchased all the equipment already or can you still make changes?

Sounds like you have thought deeply about the setup. I would bet that a tank upgrade is in your future!

I would carefully inspect all the seems with a flashlight. That needs to be a part of your weekly routine. Watch for bubbles, or anything out of the ordinary

Agreed with @VintageReefer. You should also check to make sure that the tank is leveled. From the picture posted the doors are not hung properly. That is easy to fix: you can find a copy of the owner manual on the RedSea website. If the person who put the cabinet together couldn’t get that right then you need to check everything over thoroughly.

So I have heard. Thought that problem was addressed after g1, but apparently not.

Cna any of it be returned or are you dead set on going with all the listed equipment? Specifically, one XR30 won’t do a great job at covering that footprint unless you plan to go with a mostly low light softy tank in which case the single XR30 is fine.

If mounted 8.5 inches above water on XR30 provides enough PAR to light a 2”x2” area for a mixed reef tank. If you want to go SPS at some point you likely need two XR30 assuming you have the Reefer 300 G2.

Agree. For less money you could get a reefbreeders meridian 24 and fully cover a 36x24 tank

Aquascape looks good!

I am in process of getting my G2 replaced under warranty. See post #38 of this thread for instructions on how to inspect the seams:

Thanks for the instructions. That is helpful. I've inspected the seams and see no problem. The guy who sold me the tank said he had done the same, and the seams were perfectly intact. I'll keep an eye on it. Seems that coralline algae is often the contributing factor.

I've taken par readings where I plan various coral and tried to adjust the lighting to address the needs of each coral. I've got corals with high light needs directly under the light and lower light corals toward the sides. The xr30 is set to 85% on "Radiant Color" template, with warm and cool lights are adjusted upward to 75% at the peak lighting period of the day. With those settings, I'm getting the following par readings for where each coral is to be placed.

Any thoughts on changes that you think should be made to the plan will be appreciated. Photo shows planned location of corals with exception of Favia and one Torch, which are in back corners.

Stage 1
  • Favia (Applejacks 135 par)
  • Gonipora (Red/Orange 220 par)
  • Blue and Green Ricordea (50-100 par)
  • Orange Discoma Mushroom (50 -100 par)
  • Torch (Dragon Tamer 150 par)
Stage 2
  • Acan (Lord Rainbow 90 par)
  • Torch (Holy Grail 170 par)
Stage 3
  • Micromussa (Holy Grail 150 par)
  • One additional orange discoma and one additional blue ricordea
  • Montipora (Sunset 230 par)
  • Stylophora (Electric Daisy 195 par)
Stage 4
  • Birdsnest (Ponape 270 par)
  • Montipora (Danger Zone 190 par)
  • Three orange/yellow ricordea (50-100 par)
  • One orange discoma (50-100 par)
  • One blue ricordea (50-100 par)
Stage 5 Wait until alkalinity has stabilized for at least 4-6 weeks before introducing acropora
  • Maleficent (290 par)
  • The Banger (330 par)
  • Shazam (310 par)
  • PC Rainbow (280 par)

I do have a couple of RS LED90's, that I can put to the sides if needed, but according to the par readings I was getting, the lighting would be too strong for the torches planned to go left back and right front. I've taken them off, but always put them back on if needed.

If you have done the measurement and believe you can get enough par and spread then great. Note that par will likely be less once you have water on. With a mixed reef you don’t need crazy par to grow corals.
