Hello everyone

So I’ve had this maxima for around a year now never any issues. For a few day I noticed it was closing more than usual and today I saw the top part of the mantle was not extended as usual. There was another aptasia on the left side that was there for a week or 2 so I took it out brushed it off, then added some glue. Dipped the clam in 2L of tank water with few drops iodine in case of an infection. Put it back in the tank and still the same. I looked under the clam towards the foot and saw it was a bit orangish not sure that’s the color that it always was or is it come bacterial infection. Any help would be appreciated

It's hard to tell by the pics, but I would give a couple days and see if it goes back to normal. I would need a clear shot of that area, either from above or the left side. Their shells can have some color or it could be a sponge or other growth, but I'm sure it's fine.

There was an aptasia on that side of the shell. I scrapped it off and put super glue that’s probably what you’re seeing. Only thing I can think off is that it got stung by a Torch coral? Do you know how to treat it? I did a 5 min dip in iodine

You did way more than I would’ve, so it should be fine, just some residual reaction from the aiptasia. Next time, just brush off the aiptasia in a separate container with some tank water, give a good rinse Ana put the clam back in the display. Clams aren’t corals, they have organs, etc, so they can recover without adding iodine, etc.

The aptasia was far down the shell far away from the mantle. A few months back there was another aptasia on the other side but literally underneath touching the mantle and nothing happened. What causes this? Water water parameters have been steady only 2 things I can think of I’ve added a torch coral close by so maybe it got stung? Or I recently removed all my Nems and put them in an acclimation box maybe that blocked the light a bit? So there’s no treatment? I’ve heard people say a fresh water dip?

The mantle retracted in one section doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong, there could’ve been an irritation or reaction to something, it could be nothing at all. I’ve had clams that “tucked” in portions of the mantle for a couple days and they were completely fine. Like I said earlier, just give it a couple days and see what happens, overreacting and giving it a FW dip may stress it out for no good reason at all. I also suggest buying James Fatherree’s book here. If you can take a clear (filtered or with all the blue channels off) pic of that part of the mantle, then we can see what’s going on with the mantle. Too many people think because the mantle is pulled in, that it’s PMD and dip it without getting any confirmation, this isn’t what should happen. Arm yourself with some clam knowledge and then you’ll be able to make a better decision about what to do. Keep an eye on it and report back in a couple days. There should be a sticky about PMD in the clam section.

Hey it seems like it’s going down hill. The clam has been closed more than usual and not extending as much. I did a 15 minute RO water dip 2 days ago but still seems like it’s not getting any better.

15 minutes isn’t long enough to treat PMD, you need to do the full 30 minutes, otherwise it’s pointless. Also, having a clear view of the shell, there’s no new growth on the shell and it looks like it’s been a while since there was any growth. This looks more like starvation than PMD and being on the sand bed, I’m guessing the light intensity wasn’t enough in this spot? Have you checked with a par meter? Maximas need at least 300-350 micromoles for 8hrs or more.

There is no shell growth, it means it has not been growing for a couple of months. Watching that white line of new shell growth is the most important part of clam keeping IMO, its the only way to know if the clam is healthy. Seeing it on the sand beside some pally's makes me think its not getting enough light.
