Can platygyra be placed directly on the sand bed? Or does it need to be mounted to rock?
 
Either case is fine. Start them on the sand, but like all corals. Keep sand off of them.
If the shape is strange, you can put it on a proper rock.
 
I´ve had one for a long time on the sand bed.

Recently I noticed the sand supporting borders started to recede, kindda irritated.

So I just used a dead acropora skeleton to raise it a little bit from the sand, but I don´t know if that was very important...
