Hello,

I've just taken apart my Neptune Cor 20 after a year and there is black grease everywhere on the impeller and housing and it stinks of metal. Any thoughts as to what's happend please and solution to resolve - new pump and run carbon with Wcs?

That’s unusual!

Could it be rubber paste? Or is it oily in consistency? — these pumps shouldn’t have any grease in their construction!
Very oily it stained my skin - also smells very strongly of metal - really weird as my other cor pump next to it is totally clean

Oh wow!

Okay, I suspect this is an early warning sign of pump failure… the motor is cast in epoxy… if it overheats to an extreme, the plastic motor housing and epoxy can start to melt into an oily goo… it would also explain the odor…

I’m not sure why this pump is experience a crib death, though… was it ever run dry, or did it ever get its impeller seized up on debris while running?

This might explain it, it was ran for a year and then started to report getting very warm all of sudden, I suspect due to accumulating debris - - at this point I shut it down and used pump 2, evidently it's melted it.

It just makes me also wonder what this melted epoxy goo has done to my tank, going to run some Polyfilters and carbon / water changes.

That’s probably not a bad idea… a hefty water change would likely be prudent, too!
