A 1" pipe gives you 0.785 square inches of surface area. A 2" pipe gives you 3.14 square inches of surface area. 4x.785=3.14. Yup, exactly four 1" pipes equal one 2" pipe. The formula is either diameter squared x.785 or Pi x radius squared.
