I have a used 120 gallon glass aquarium with 2 overflows. It is pre-drilled with 2 holes in each overflow. What would be the best way to plumb this? Should I have 1 drain and 1 return on each side? This will be my first plumbed aquarium and hoping someone can give me good advice on best options.

You can either do one drain and one return per-overflow box, or two drains per-overflow box, and plumb your return up outside the back of the tank, over the rim!

The two drain per-box plumbing arrangement is often referred to as a “Herbie” drain system:

— it employs a primary drain an and an emergency drain…

— The primary drain is restricted using a valve until it creates a siphon, silencing any gurgling or air bubbling noises common to gravity drainage systems…

Use 3 holes for a bean animal drain setup, and the fourth drain for return.
You won’t be sorry.
Congratulations on your new toy.

Guessing his tank is “reef ready”. Meaning it was originally designed to have one overflow and one return in each corner.

Can I do a bean animal? There is 2 holes in each corner, I think it’s called reef ready, I thought all 3 pipes had to be in the same corner.

You can absolutely do it. Have done it on a bunch of tanks. Would make primary (full siphon) and secondary in one corner. Emergency and return in the other corner.

Wow. This is brilliant. Can anyone explain the benefits of this method?
