Lots of factors will come into this.
Socks or Reefmatt
Single or Dual Pumps
Any Reactors
Is it going through a UV
Chiller?

Map out what you need to have connected to this, and then its not so hard to plan out.
I did my tank with dual overflows if you need some reference pics.

Hello!

A pic would certainly go a long way here, but I think you likely have a standard tank with the plastic trim on top and bottom, and the "weirs" or overflows in each corner.

If so, those were made to use a single overflow pipe called a Durso. The other, smaller hole was intended for a return line. I ran a 125 back in like 2006 or 2007 that way. No problems other than water noise, but I've learned more since then, and I wouldn't recommend that setup today.

Then there's the next gen of overflows, the "Herbie" style. These used one drain line along with one emergency drain that would, as the name implies, only be used in case of emergency. These are very popular. You could easily setup your tank with both the holes acting as a Herbie "main" and a Herbie "emergency". Then, you'd need to route or plumb your return lines appropriately, but at least you may not flood :)

A Herbie style system is great because not if but when a snail crawls into your main drain pipe, the emergency pipe will accommodate the excess water, mitigating a flood.

A really great guy from the old ReefCentral days who is active here on R2R developed a great 3 drain system, affectionately called the Bean Animal overflow. This is "the best" because it it has a main drain line, a second line, and a final emergency line that hopefully you'll never need. Most would consider this setup the "gold standard", but you can plumb a tank many ways.

I hope that helps and best of luck!
