PNS Deep Cycle

Cycling my first tank. Owner of LFS told me to use PNS deep cycle and add 0.2ppm daily. Also told me to cycle at a higher temp of 80F. I’ve been slowly building my tank and doing tons of research for about 9 months. This is the first I’ve heard of this method and just wanted to get everyone’s thoughts.

Raising the temp can result in the bacteria populating quicker, as can lowering salinity, at least, according to Dr. Tim Hovanec from Dr. Tim's Aquatics. There's a video you can search for of a talk he gave at a MACNA event on cycling tanks, and how to speed up the process.

I personally wouldn't put a lot of effort in speeding up the process; it's going to happen in about three weeks, give or take, for most systems and bacteria-in-a-bottle products.

The one exception seems to be Fritz TurboStart 900, which can establish a bio filter than can safely sustain fish in as little as about 48 to 72 hours or so. This one product seems to be the exception to the rule.

Going slowly is often good advice in reefing

This is very helpful, thank you. Was interested in the reasoning behind the high temp. I’m in no rush and if I’ve learned anything, patience is key in this hobby. I’m also now reading that the PNS deep cycle is more beneficial after the nitrogen cycle is complete. Any preference on bottled bacteria for the initial cycle? I’m leaning toward microbacter start from brightwell after doing some digging.

I got my tank to eat up 2ppm of ammonia in a few days. Then dosed 4 ppm ammonia, 5ppm is the limit. On day 8 I put in all 23 of my fish. Systems running since with no issues at all. 300 gal system cycled with TS 900.

Another turbo start 900 user here. It worked well when I used it but using some live rock is my preferred method.
