One coral I have always wanted to keep was poccilopora verrucosa, I know it grows fairly abundantly throughout indo Pacific, I hardly see it in the trade though? it grows in warty looking large dense lobes, I always thought its growth pattern was really cool.

Anyone have one in their current tank? or have kept a specimen in the past? Do they "polyp bailout" like P. damicornis and become a pest?

Tagged because I'm curious too. I think I heard that @PacificEastAquaculture sometimes has them. If not, I'd start asking around at importers. (e.g. Diver's Den). It's very common in the wild, it's just a matter of getting it.

ETA: OP, if you're real serious and you don't get any leads in a few days, PM me. Even though we live in different parts of the US, maybe there's some value asking an importer to import it together.

Thank you for your response! Yeah its got s wide natural range, very common, I dont think it's a very desirable aquaculture species though as Its big, clunky and dense.

I just really dig its growth structure.

Therman sells a frag he calls pink Hawaiian pocillopora that might be this species. Really not sure but it is definitely more massive than the standard. I have it and it is growing nicely.

By the way, I have a number of pocillopora and the only one that I have seen bail-out on is the standard green/brown variety.

Nice pic! the pink poccilopora can be hard to come by!
I'm looking for Poccilopora verrucosa which can be hard to find, yours looks to be Poccilopora damicornis.
Be careful, that species likes to spit out single polyps that will spread around the tank

I had one about 20 years ago, lasted about 6 months before RTNing, think they need high flow to be happy of course I was pretty new to SPS at the time as well.

Agree, strong flow something of importance to this species I believe, every pic I have seen of them is on the reef crest, also that thick, dense skeleton they have is another indicator to me that these like strong water movement.

I had one about 15 years ago before Hurricane Katrina wiped out my tank. It did not have polyp bailout. I have seen them from time to time on Divers Den(green and pink) but the pink ones get snatched up fast. They need plenty of light and flow. They are from very shallow water.

Yeah, that one's pocilliopora damicornis, not verrucosa.

I have a P.Damicornis like that. :) Actually, two that I'm trying to fuse together - they grew out of two ash-and trash frags I got for free. probably from the same mother colony. Quite fond of it; I'll post a pic tomorrow.

Oddly enough, COTW has a comparison pic, with a purple damicornis on the right and a white verrucosa (not as nice as Pacific east's) on the left..

I think I have a verrucosa which I bought from Vivid corals 1.5 years ago although they don’t list it on their stock frags. It’s very slow growing but very pink (14” directly under 400w 14K halides and near MP40 pump):

I have two faster growing ORA pink P. damicornis under similar conditions:
