Poll: Frags versus Mother Colonies

Definitely frags. I enjoy watching them grow. Really shows that the effort you put into your reef pays off in the long run. All the husbandry eventually leads you to having a full mother colony, rather than jumping straight to the mother colony and buying all of it instead.

frags mostly especially the $18 grab bag from the lfs. They sell all the small stuff that brakes off of the mother colonies in the dt. The one I bought was about 10 small unmounted frags. its fun to watch them grow.

if i have to vote its frags.

for me i could care less if its LPS or zoas. but for SPS i prefer frags hands down. you get a piece which will grow and expand in the way it wants.with colonies it was grown under different conditions and is in a growth pattern in relation to flow and light from another tank, you cant exactly replicate it so IMO SPS frags are better

Frags for sure - I don't have the option of buying mother colonies - not for a lack of money but for a lack of space. If I buy a mother colony it isn't conformed to my tank and looks out of place taking up far more space than a frag that I let grow to the same size. A frag can grow into the shape of your rockwork and look natural. If you have lots of space a big colony is the way to go - but it takes much longer for them to look natural (if ever).

it's nice to watch the grow progress from the frag. If you are setting a new tank with nothing in it. You could do mix of colonies and frags otherwise frags alone would looks weird on a bigger tank.

not true some frags are $100-1,000$+ so i wouldn't say that for an excuse lol!

Well actually if the frag cost 100-1000$ the mother colony cost 5-8000$ so the frag is still the cheaper way to go. :)

+1 i love watching all my stuff grow i look at the tank every day just to see slight detail in growth. its awesome.! but to addicting! my girlfriend hates me now cause that is all i talk about and compare things like rose bushes to zoanthids and stuff like that. im gonna post a picture of a red planet mother colony out in the garden. lol you guys will laugh i can frag it for you! very cheap! lol!

Frags mostly because when they grow in to your tank it looks so natural and awesome. You just can't get that with mother colonies.

Exactly and most mother colonies die because they cant adjust to our tank as easily.
