I like small colonies, 3-4 inch. The half inch frags are rediculous unless the prices were lower. $200 for something you can’t even see can’t be right. I’m not a supplier and don’t know all the reasons for the prices but someone is getting rich.

This is a great question I've always been a fan of growing out my own frags but I also don't mind a mini colony as well.

Depends on the coral. I buy colonies of corals that either grow slow or don't look quite right as frags (blastos being my big one, even though I have plenty of frags of those too!). I used to buy all frags, but now that I can afford some nicer colonies (not even anything huge, my tanks are all nanos), I buy those when I can. A tank full of frags isn't as appealing visually to me, but I enjoy growing the frags, so a combo is best for me.

frags are more popular because their are affordable.
but I noticed recently even frags prices can be quite high.
I would not be surprised if the trend goes towards mini or even nano frags.

My tank has mostly frags right now but I feel it's kind of cluttered, so I am actually thinking of selling some of the frags and replacing them with bigger colonies. I think I would prefer 10-20 medium-large corals that are carefully selected and curated, instead of 50-100 smaller frags that look great individually but will take years to fill in.

everyone is different, I feel like it's a personal choice and a matter of taste as well..

Colonies don't come in wild anymore , for the most part maricultured.

You really have to like that coral to pick up the colony.

I prefer frags to grow into colonies

I initially bought some frags AND some colonies. Cause patience lol.

However I found too many critters with the colonies. Some horrifying  . Even after dipping. And re dipping.

So, I will stick with frags from now on, and only a few at a time. Easier and safer to manage IMO. Although I might set up a quarantine frag tank soon.

Love to watch the frags grow. I have had greater success with frags than colonies. With a frag it is usually coming from s specimen that has already proven to be successful. With a colony it could have come out of the ocean 2 weed ago with out any knowledge of how it will perform in a captive environment.

Nowadays i have no choice but buying frags. There is not much colonies to buy. I chose my corals by color not by name so for me i prefer i get a colony. I have a big tank 360g so i have to wait at least 3 years before i can really enjoy the tank from growing 1” frags.

I do both. But mostly frags. Easier to relocate a frag to adjust your look than an odd shaped colony

I’d say I’m a frag guy mostly, mainly because they’re more affordable. Having said that I wouldn’t pass up a nice colony if it was within my budget, I’m yet to buy a colony though.

I prefer to buy frags or mini colonies for my system. I enjoy watching the pieces grow out, and I save quite a bit of money. However, frags are getting very expensive lately.. I just can't justify spending $400 for a half inch stick.
