Premium ROX 0.8 is a specialty activated carbon that removes organic waste compounds.
It is extruded, tiny, extremely hard pellets resulting in less dust and reducing the amount of fines released into the water.

Claims –
Best carbon on the market according to BRS.
High numbers of large and small pores giving it all the advantages of both lignite and bituminous carbons.
Will make your water crystal clear faster with less material.
Super low dust content rinsing is quick and doesn’t require much water.
Offers superior absorption.
Used by pharmaceutical companies to create ultra-pure water.
  • Iodine Number: 1000 min.
  • Ball-Pan Hardness: 97 min.
  • Surface area (BET) m2/g: 1225
  • pH: Neutral
  • Food Chemicals Codex: Passes
  • Ash, Mass %: 3
  • Methylene blue absorption g/100g: 24
  • Washed with Hydrochloric Acid

Purigen® is a synthetic adsorbent filtration product that removes organic waste compounds.
It is a macro-porous synthetic polymer.

Claims –
Is the highest capacity organic filtration resin on the market. No other products can compare.
Removes soluble and insoluble impurities from water at a rate and capacity that exceeds all other competing products by over 500%.
Impact on trace elements is minimal.
Significantly raises redox.
Polishes water to unparalleled clarity.
Darkens progressively as it exhausts.
Is easily renewed by treating with bleach.

I'd be very interested to see if Purigen compares to Rox in efficiency.

Purigen has an advantage in that it changes color as its adsorption ability decreases.

It can also be regenerated, where as the carbon can't be.

Depending on efficiency, what about cost comparison?

How would you propose testing it?

That is, what end point matters most to you?

If they may bind slightly different things (or, perhaps, bind the same things with varying degrees of efficacy), the nature of the test and the evaluation may determine the outcome.

The bituminous coal - lignite coal - ROX, type of comparison test BRS performed would be a good place to start. That would give an indication if one stood out from the other.

I don't see the point really. BRS have compared all the carbons extensively and 0.8 is a monster. It will strip your water dangerously fast if you use too much or push too much water over it.

Thats why I'd like to see the comparison, ie, is purigen as effective?

If it is, then how long does it last till it needs regeneration, in comparison to ROX ?

Purigen changes color, so you have a more definitive indication as when to regenerate it, rather than just guessing.
How effective is purigen when it has dis-colored slightly?
How effective is it after regeneration? after a 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc, regeneration?

It would be interesting to see how such resins compare to carbon. I would expect carbon to work against a broader spectrum of contaminants and resin to be more specific but that’s really just my best guess. Not too sure about capacity. Both have been around for a long time and are used in a variety of applications so it’s quite possible that this is all known information already. Surely there’s a reason why so many of us default to carbon.

Also, it is quite easy to check when your carbon is exhausted. When you perform water changes, compare a bucket of new and old water side by side. If the old bucket is discolored, then it’s time to change it out.
