I am currently in the process of growing out some zoas and was curious what the community prefers when it comes to frag size. I'm not referring to the actual frag plug size (that will be a later topic ;)) but how many polyps you tend to buy.

Obviously price is a pretty huge determining factor, but is that the only factor? Do most of you prefer to buy just a few and watch them grow out, or do you prefer to buy mini-large size colonies?

Thanks!

There's a fine line between when you frag the zoa vs. when it finally sells. If you have a higher end stain that you frag as 2 heads but are unable to sell for a few weeks it'll (in theory) increase in value as it tacks on a few heads. However, if you're selling a desirable strain with more heads on it then people will expect a better pp.

When possible I always prefer to get at least 2p (even if it's a super expensive zoa) because you've got at least some margin of error. On more common stuff I'm generally going to expect at least 3 heads relative to price but I'm not above buying a mini-colony.

I don’t have much luck with Zoa’s because my tanks are to clean but the majority of the ones I have purchased have been 5 to 10 polyps.. I would never buy a single or two polyp frag and I wouldn’t buy a colony either because my tanks are small.

If it is a high end zoa then I expect to buy anywhere from 1-4 polyps, if it is mid range or lower end then anywhere from like 5-10. It's just easier to sell some of the more common zoas if they have more polyps. I wouldn't want to buy a single polyp of scrambled eggs for $3-$5, i'd rather buy 5 for $15-$20.

I would rather buy larger but most of the polyps I buy would cost a fortune for more than a few.

Every one is going to be different. The best is to frag several different size ones. A two head and four head, etc. Price them accordingly.

Very True.

People usually always want the Colonies.

But They Rarely are Willing to Pay the Price.

They Seem to Rather Spend Less (Save Money, Buy More Frags, etc.) on Smaller Frags.

Some Like One Polyp Frags because they Want to Watch Them Grow.

Others Refuse to Buy Less than 5 or 10 Polyps.

It all Depends on the Person.

I Would Say Price is the Determining Factor With 90 Percent of People.

I generally try to get frags with at least 2-3 polyps, for survival/growth rates. That being said, so far I have been very fortunate and only lost one zoa frag in my current systems (and it was murdered by dino!)
Every once in awhile, my local aquaculture will sell me a fat 5-10 polyp frag for the same price as the little ones :D

Great idea for a thread/poll! Following along, especially since I may begin fragging soon...
Current plan is to frag single polyps where possible, then grow them out to 3 polyp plug and sell!

We'll see how that goes ;)
