What I meant to say is dosing without testing...at least for foundation elements I like to test before dosing...

Ill order salifert or go to my lfs if they can test my k iodine and copper. I have not tested my tank with those.

For acropora, PE is mainly for gas exchange. If you don't have any nipping fish or inverts, then the polyps are retracted because they are getting enough gas exchange. If you turn all of the flow pumps off, then the polyps come out more to exchange more gas since the water around the coral is getting stagnant. More PE at night when the photosynthesis is not exchanging gasses.

Some SPS can have polyps out to try and eat, but this appears more pronounced in Stylos and Poci than others.

You can do more damage chasing PE than by just forgetting about it. Go by growth and color as your guide to coral health.

Make sense.

But isnot white needed for growth?
I don’t know. Maybe higher white would make them grow faster but i care more about what they look like. They’re growing fast enough for me.

I never test iodine and cupper myself. The kits are pain. Icp do it for me instead ha ha.
I would not worry too much about iodine..
Again To me I test alk, ca,mag, k+(monthly or every 2 months)
Let us know how it goes..bird nest usually have its polyp extended all the time..at least in my personal experience...

Did I miss where the question about the angelfish and blennies was answered. Still waiting to hear about the flame or coral beauty that “doesn’t nip”

I’ve never seen anything even remotely scientific or just through observation that would suggest iodine levels or potassium levels has any impact. Same goes for copper...

The biggest issue here is that there’s some belief that PE is a sign of coral health. I’ve watched fully extended polyps peel off of a skeleton before, and I’ve seen healthy and rapidly growing colonies have little to not PE. PE is often (not always!) a lousy indicator of coral health

Yeah used to have dwarf angel on my 20g but not on my 40g. Clownfish, wrasse, mandarin, tomini tang, purple and red firefish

100% agreed.
Coral health do not not neccesarily mean more pe or visa versa, there is even a theory say too much PE might mean coral is starving...
I think coloration and growth are better indicators of coral health.

24-48 Polyp retraction has been the first sign of any sps stess/death. They will temporarily retract from snails, crabs fish, heavy flow etc but when they retract for a long period, especially after sundown, I know something is wrong. This has happened every time for me. I’ve never had an sps coral have good pe then stn/rtn. As long as the polyps are somewhat extended, I know they’re happy.

My point was that it’s very unlikely related to some parameter being a little off. Especially not something like potassium, copper, or iodine that have never shown any indication of effecting PE.

To the OP, check your tank before lights on or a while after lights out. Is there PE then?

I agree with that. Ive had normal and elevated k, bromine, calcium, and even arsenic according to my icp tests, and haven’t had any significant change in pe or coral health it seems.

After lights theres some little polyp extension. Thats the tome i try to feed with fuel. As far as i know k iodine is more of a supplement for coloration.

I mean i have the tank and light for more than a year. With my current light settings its 2 months. But always every night there will be some polyp extension.

Lots of my coral will extend polyps at night...I heared once it's because coral in nature tend to feed at night away from preditors...

In any event, you have couple of things to chase, will tag along to learn what conclusion you come up with.

Good luck.

Iodine mostly just supplements the bank accounts of supplement companies ;)

Lol. Now I feel stupid for supplementing. Although I can tell when my system need iodin by the blue colors and usually supplement based on the color of some of my acros..ha ha
I will agree with this arugment if it was about iodin test kits not the supplement itself.

I would only worry about PE if it is not "normal" for your tank. A really hairy Millepora, for example, that suddenly has no PE... this should be paid attention to. On the converse, a coral with next to no normal PE also has a bunch all of a sudden, then I would get to testing some water since it could not being having a hard time respiring... like too much ammonia or nitrite all of a sudden.
