Ok so this isn't a reef question but do u guy think I could make a koi pond in ground then line it with painters plastic and it would hold water or would the plastic break

Diesel, I honestly love the way you can be talking about saltwater all the time and then switch to fresh water with the same endless stream of knowledge like it's the same thing

Installing koi ponds is what my company does as well.
It was a passion way back in Holland when I was a kid as we dug a small pond and used that painters plastic to hold water forctadpoles, little minos and what more.

It is around 2 ft deep 6 feet long and 3 ft wide I've been doing freshwater for 5 years but I have never tried a pond so I was looking for something cheap I could set up with a hole in the ground

Go with a pond liner and do it right the first time. Even poor quality pond liners break down after a couple of years from exposure to the elements. Its not fun having to get everything out and lay a new liner.

Out here in the stix, we've got a slightly different definition of a 'pond'... Here's my grandson, enjoying our pond. :)

UV will break down the plastic or tarp, but a real pond liner. Just google it, they are all over amazon and E-bay. I would suggest laying down a layer in between as well. I have replaced the layer on ponds more often than I would care to have done. It is a major PIA. What makes it worse is removing the 20 ton of rock to get to the liner.

reason I ask is Ewing irrigation is a nation wide company abd there might be one in your area.
They have the best prices on liners.
Of course a hole in the ground and lay the liner down.

Make sure you have a good shovel.............. or three skit loaders to do the job right.

Than you lay the liner, these are two liner of 100'x50' seamed together with double tape seamed.
Did I tell you liners are heavy, each of the rolls weighted 4 tons, so that was 8 tons of rubber.

Of course you have to rock it to help the eco-balance.
40 pallets of rock that each weighted approx 4200lb

Oh and did I mention we build the same pond in the front yard as well.

I agree with all the advice above. Pond liner is a must for longevity. Also google Pond building tips, steps and filtration. Aquascape inc has a lot of great informational videos on their site and YouTube. I built ponds for years at my previous job. Actually really happy to be helping my old boss with a new water feature in his yard. I forgot how much I enjoyed it! Still a long way to go!

Yes sir! This one is going to move a ton of water 8000gph for the bowl and waterfall and 4000gph for the 3 urns and 3 bubbling rocks. Should be pretty nice when it’s done. Been a while but I think I still have it, kinda lol.

These were just still on my phone but I've done larger ponds cause everything is big in TEXAS.

Yup, last year I changed jobs. Needed more money and benefits. I’m still friends with my old boss and he asked me to help him with a water feature as part of his backyard makeover which included a new pool, 12’x12’ pacer chess board, and some other cool things. I forgot how much I enjoyed doing it!
