That's what I thought, just didn't notice them in your pictures.

What purpose are they serving? A nutrient reducer?

This isn't my tank. But, I can kind of answer this. As most plants use co2 and nutrients + photosynthesis to grow, it would have added reduction to nutrients and co2 levels from the home environment. The amount of reduction is hard to calculate. There are some theories that mangroves help with cyano and other types of algae. Again the amount of help is difficult to say.
