Hey,

For the past 2 weeks I’ve been having some green algae on my rocks and sand bed that is easily blown off. Having to blow off the rocks everyday it seems and it keeps coming back. Sands not super stringy but it is green and unsightly. Don’t think it’s regular diatoms. Tested my tank and phos is .12 and nitrates somehow went to 0 and I’ve been trying to get them up. Only run filter floss in the tank too, no skimmer, cheato, or anything else. Some advice or help would be great. Couldn’t get good algae at the time to put under microscope but this is what I got below.

What are your parameters?

If you just got over dinoflagellates , I would not do any shock treatment yet. Those Cyanobacteria are outcompeting the Dino’s which is great news, I know it’s unsightly though.

I just keep doing what your doing for now, maybe get an ICP test to see if your lacking in any trace elements , also make sure to keep your nutrient in ratio or close to it.
(Phosphate 1 : Nitrate 100)
EG. .1ppm phosphate : 10ppm Nitrate

I just did some testing.

Alk 7.5
Phos .04 went down from .12 with yesterdays water change

Calc 390
Nitrate 0. Been 0 for about 3 weeks or so can’t get them to go up and I have 0 filtration besides filter floss

Salinity 1.025/6

I haven’t had any nuisance algae besides a little gha that my emeralds cleaned up asap. This stuff popped up 3 weeks ago or so and it blows easily off my rocks but isn’t slimy at all. Tank is 8 months old.

Just going to continue blowing off rocks and water changes once a week and changing floss. Need to get some bigger nassarius snails bc mine are babies and was thinking a conch could clean it up nice?

You need to get nitrate up. That is likely your prob.
Neo-nitrate or fauna Marin element N.

I wouldn’t be doing water changes if you can’t keep your nitrates up

Yeah I’m trying to get them up. Starting to feed multiple times a day. If I can’t get em up soon I’m gonna buy the bottled nitrate.

Freshwater filter only or is it? Have you ever used an HOB filter on a saltwater tank?
