Possibly keeping 2 flame angels in a 90.

I'm looking for any advice on my stock of fish, but primarily concerned about the angelfish. Long term goal is to have my 180 setup, and a separate frag system where they will be separated once again. But to make that work in the short term, I plan on setting up a single 90. And combining 3 tanks inhabitants into it to make room for the build. (Suffering from Multiple Tank Syndrome at the moment.) There are 2 coral beauties involved in their own tanks at the moment.

Should I put in a egg grate to keep the two fish separate for the time being and err on the side of caution? Or do you think there will be enough confusion for all parties involved with a new home that we may be able to try all of them in the same setup.

Here's my fish list I plan to combine. Those with * have been tank mates before.

65 gal: melanurus wrasse, clown

50 gal: naso tang *, coral beauty *

40 gal breeder: indigo dottyback, clown, coral beauty, bristletooth tomini tang*

The previous tankmates were my uncle's and I took them in when he got out of the hobby. The 50 was setup as a temporary home to keep the angelfish apart, and to give the naso a bit larger home while I assessed everything I got in from him.

I was researching how to tell the males from females and realized I didn't have flame angels before posting the edit.

IMO, the egg crate is probably a good idea, especially if the 2 CBs are similar in size

Confusion & aqua scrape relocation will keep them uninterested in each other

I have a coral beauty and flame angel in my 65g with no issues at all. The CB pummeled the flame when I first added him and i.put a 12x12 inch mirror on the front of my tank and all the fish became mesmerized. Took it off 3 days later and the neighborhood was in harmony.

If you have coral beauties for any length of time 2+ weeks or longer, they will be males if they are of any size at all. I would guess 1.5 inches. In Dwarf angels, singleton will turn male. There will be fights when you get them together until the looser turn female. Mortality in this process is high, at least 75% in a usual 55 gal (in a study with Flame angels)
I would not put those two together unless you able to determine that you don’t have 2 males. I don’t keep Coral Beauty so I do not know how to tell male from female in this species.

I have a flame angel and a CB in my 75 without any issues. Albeit, I did add them at the same time when they were juvis.

One male and all the other coral beauty needs to be very young juveniles . that will not incite aggression. . Battle between 2adult males will not be good . They would encounter each other often in the smaller tank . the flames are easier to tell if they haven’t differentiated into males . But with other dwarfs it best to choose smaller younger specimens. YouTube video shows a harem of flame backs (aurontonotus) . Again it’s one larger and two smaller submissive flame backs .

What I have been referring to was adding the same species to make a harem . . You have two different species . 75 gal Is not big enough for them to avoid each other. . Some do have multiple species of dwarf angels . You will have to ask in a new thread so that others may respond . I will stick with one species only per tank . Because I don’t want to see that aggression

Update on my flames . My male , large flame dorsal and anal fin are definitely pointed and elongated. I have had him over 6 years . I purchased a very small flame at petco that didn’t show pointed and elongated fins . They were definitely rounded . I introduced them and the established male paid no attention to the smaller one for 6 weeks . They often swam past each other without any incident . Fast forward the male is now chasing the female , consistently yet I don’t see any damage to the fins of the smaller one . I do notice now that he is circling her and chasing her since she is not accepting any of his gestures . She maybe is still too immature to spawn . But he definitely is showing her a lot of attention now . I am wanting to get another small flame when one becomes available for the right price .

I will find out this weekend how it goes. I setup a barrier in the 90 that is at 1/3rd 2/3rd ratio, and will see how they do. I was letting the sand, salinity, and live rock settle in. I moved some GSP a few days back into it and even noticed an asterina star on the glass. Can never be too careful when moving that many fish in a few days I feel.

Sorry to hear that. I love the flame angels, and my wife loves the coral beauties, so that is what we went with.
