The Ecotech is ingenious. I agree with that 100%. You don't have any power in the tank. All of the electrical is outside the tank. There is no denying that's a good thing. I didn't go with the Ecotech because I liked being able to control the direction of the flow. But people have been running internal pumps for decades, so I went with the directional control as opposed to the dry electrics.
I'm running the jbj ocean streams w/ the controller on my 90 gallon atm. It cost like 90.00 on sale at marine depot. Each pump does 850gph and I have them set to alternate every 45 seconds. They work great for what they cost. I also run 2@ 3/4 in. loc line eductors fed from my OR6500 return pump. I just couldn't swallow an 800.00 dollar bill to buy 2 mp40's...

I'm pretty new to this hobby and as a broke college student, saving money is always a priority, but even I can see the value in doing it right the first time. That's why I plan on saving up and adding vortechs one at a time. there's no sense in wasting money on something your going to replace later down the line

Flow is flow and good flow isn't always the right flow. Having a 40Br for almost 10 years, I've tried many... many different PHs. You name it, I've most likely tried it. I personally think people forget a difference aspect between the Vortech and other directional pumps. It takes less work, IMO, to situate a vortech correctly, than it does most other pumps. I would honestly say if you go with something outside the vortech world, and yet make the pump work well in the tank (As many others have), then great! You've saved money and can enjoy the hobby just fine.
After saying all of this I personally have two MP10's in my 40Br, and I absolutely love them. I wouldn't go back, but I understand your plight. I think Tunze's are great pumps as well. Prior to my Vortechs, I used the non-controllable Koralias.. and while it took many (A whole heck of a lot) tries to get their placing right, my tank chugged on just fine and happy. :)

Controllers are good for flow patterns versus straight flow all the time. One on one off creating currents within tank versus straight turbulence all the time

Not sure just have always done it. Think of a tide pool or a reef when tide is coming in and going out. The goal is to replicate nature to the best of our ability.
