I'm currently in the planning and research stages of my first reef build. In researching powerheads, it seems like a pair of Vortech MP10s would be the most suggested but I’m looking for a cheaper alternative. If I went powerheads, it would be in the $50-150 per powerhead range but what has really caught my eye is the Icecap 3k gyre.

Does anyone have experience with these or the more expensive MaxSpect ones? It looks like it could be set up horizontally at one end of the 40 breeder or vertically in one of the back corners. I’m curious to hear anyone’s experiences with these or if I should stick with the more conventional powerheads?

I have two XF230's in my 4 x 18 x 16 tank, they push a lot of water. In fact they push enough that I still haven't found a happy place for my sand not to get blown out of the middle of the tank.
