I'm expecting a frag of this one soon and would like to see a picture of any colonies out there.

For some reason Sonny has never posted his colony and I've only seen encrusted frags.

Why is it called a rainbow? Looks just red to me.

I'm guessing because all of the colors it has as a frag

The coral has shades of orange and pink. In some cases, blue has developed. The base of the coral has green and blue. When a frag experiences good growth, you see light to dark blue in the growth edge.

As James ^ mentioned, it develops some green and/or blue around the base. I have mine about 18" below my t5 fixture. All the shots I've seen of this coral, the branches are much thinner than the photos on Sonny's site. At first, I thought my colony wasn't getting enough flow, but it appears they all look like this.

I don't have a pic but I keep mine in high light and high flow and colors look great

Are you getting any PE? I notice only the last pic has any noticeable pe. Mine hasn't shown any.

Most corals display better color as frags, which is why 90% of vendors only sell frags. Most people fall out of love with their chalices when they grow out and display less colors. Likewise with Acropora as well. I don't think anyone should ever buy a coral just based on how the frag looks. I'd almost always want to see the mother colony to see what it will look like when it's grown out.

Either way, that SPS is still very, very pretty.

According to the source of where Jason acquired it, I was told that this coral will show it's gold/orange colors more when it is lower in the tank as opposed to high light.

My experience has been the opposite, I love watching my ugly little SPS frags grow into beautiful colonies. Some of them have taken years to show their true potential. My experience has been semi fresh cut frags from the vendor, some show up nice some are brown as can be and almost all lose color before they get back to the nice color they started out as.

+1 I miss my larger colonies, but it is fun to watch the little frags grow out for sure. Yes frags can sometimes appear more colorful because well, you have multiple colors in a 1/2" section instead of spread out over a 6+x6+ section.... IMO nothing beats a well grown out SPS tank.


As for PC rainbow, my frag (1.5" or so) is almost completely orange w/ redish polyps, and a blue/green base under higher light and about 4-5" from my mp40 that is set at 100% on reef crest. I recently ticked off my tank tho so everything is on its way back to being colored up more but when it was colored up nicely it was pink, blue & orange body, redish polyps, with a bright blue base. :)
