How much do you rely on product reviews when shopping for new equipment on a scale of 1-10, 1 being least likely to base purchase of review and 10 is a definite yes.

It depends on the source of the review, really. Some anonymous reviewer, not as as much, as it could be a schill. A member here that has some history, moreso.

Great point. I wouldn't want to read a review written by a marineland employee stating their lights out perform natural sun light or something ridiculous.

Being able to point out fraudulent reviews is a great skill. Like you said, reviews done by non biased experienced reefers are hands down the best ones

I think reviews from manufacters are biased. I only trust other reefers when it comes to reviews.

Not all mfgs are biased though. Logan from reef breeders won't lie about his product's capabilities and has never tried pushing something on me or anyone i know of that won't do what we need it to. Of course he won't deny a sale if you tell him you have a 600 gallon tank an only want a single value fixture. He will however inform you it won't cover the whole thing. With that said, I still would rather hear it from an average joe than from the person selling it.

Id say 8 for me as I tend to see reviews more often by those wanting to bash the product when they had issues whether or not it was the product's fault. Reef2Reef or other reefers only I would put it at a 9.5.

I feel honored to be apart of the 9.5ers haha
When I invent the next amazing reef product I promise I won't do my own review, however the commercial will be devastating to all competition bwaaahahahahahahaha. Oh crap, the greed is already kicking in. Hold on let me go share a link on Facebook and get back to my normal generous self. That reminds me of a bazooka gum joke.
What do you call a greedy clam?
Shellfish!

Now let me ask you this:

Product reviews on vendor sights done by customers...are these taken seriously or do you feel there is too loose of a range of opinion to be truly helpful?
Say you find a skimmer on amazon, those customer reviews.

8+ for me. i typically read several reviews from various sources before making a purchase.

I do look at the worst review first just to see for potential issues.

The worst ones make good entertainment sometimes too haha. Different hobbies have a different crowd, so the less upper class things like guitar gear have some pretty epic reviews. Musicians are certainly creative with their criticism! I know I am haha.

Here is my take on reviews. A product has to be pretty good for me to take the time to review it. On the flip side. It could annoy me for a few hours and I'm tempted to let them have it. I assume that most people are similar and in most cases even more picky about things having to be perfect. So if I see and handful of good reviews (legit ones of course) and a handful of bad ones I lean towards the good side. That all being said I'm probably I 7.5er on trusting reviews

How likely are you to buy something with good reviews that has no possibility of being seen in person first? For example, a new type of lighting system that has never been purchased by anyone in your area and is only sold through a single source online gets good reviews by the first few people to use the product, and only for a short time since it is new. (Like when LEDs first hit the market).
