Protein Skimmer Help Please

Hey Guys,

So i ordered the cad lights gen 3 pls-100 skimmer for my all in on 90 gallon and my dumb self counted the 1/2 in glass in the dimension for the space i have so insted of 5 inches i actually have 4 1/2 inches. So now this i s basically the only quality skimmer i could use for the space i have.

My question is if i take the time to do slowly i could shave/file off some of the plastic nubs on the side of skimmer? I have attached a picture to better show the hubs im talking about. But i actually wouldnt be filing any of the skimmer just the white plastic nubs and some the white circle the upper body is attached to. I would only have to shave down one side as i only need a 1/4 inch at most.

Also i figured i do the filing process very slowly, and that if i did by chance cause the body to pop loose that id be able to silicone back together, is this thinking correct?
