So being newer to reefing I am always studying reefkeeping principles and watching videos.

One thing that I have found is that some in our hobby run protein skimmers while at the same time running an airstone. I usually see both in a sump or refugium. Being a newer reefer, this has made me wonder why?

To my understanding one of the main reasons for running an airstone is to oxygenate the water as this has several benefits. I guess what I don't understand is why one would need to do so if they are already running a skimmer that bubbles that same water in the same way.

Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated as I am an analytical type of person who questions everything.

Aside from additional oxygenation maybe they are being used for water movement? The rising bubbles will create some water movement.
