Where to locate protein skimmer?

What would yall recommend? I seen ppl take one of the filters out to place the protein skimmer there or should I put it in the middle of where the water is collected , thanks in advance (picture provided)

What tank is this? Am I seeing dual water inlets on the outsides, flowing to a shared center compartment with a single center return outlet?
