Puffer acclimation help!!!!!!

Just bought a Porcupine puffer from lfs, have it floating in tank right now. It was swimming around at the store and all the way home then I started adding tank water to the bag and now it’s at the bottom of the bag, no fins moving, breathing sorta heavily.

Tank is ~1 month old seeded with rocks from my 2yr old tank with clowns, gobies, pistol shrimp etc

Acclimation stress ? Or is this a cause of concern? Fish looks healthy no signs of disease that I can see other then lethargic behavior at the moment

Test the water parameters it came in and test your water parameters. And get it out of the bag.
If your tank parameters are out of whack and can’t be immediately remedied, take it back to the store right away.

Also, dropping in an airstone for more oxygenation can only help.

An air stone will potentially increase ammonia.

I would opt to get it into the tank sooner rather than later.

Update: he’s in and doing fine, just playing with his reflection but not sure if he has disease or not

Does @Jay Hemdal still use this website ? Or anyone else that’s super knowledgeable with fish diseases and could look at him for me ?? Just would like a second opinion. Idk why videos never work for me on here lol

I can’t see anything unusual.

Can’t see any dots on the fins, but he’s moving fast. Maybe let him settle.

Good idea. I’m gonna give it an hour or so to see if he stops pacing up and down to get a better vid

That’s what puffers do, pace all around. Sounds like he’s doing good.
Still a good idea to check you’re water parameters.

Sounds like it got a bit “shocky” from acclimation. A common problem is when the LFS keeps their fish in lower salinity and you then try to acclimate up to full salinity.

That’s what I was thinking too, maybe I was adding too much at a time.



What do you think of this ?? Healthy or ich or something? Tried to get it under whites, would you QT ?? Really don’t want to, if there’s any other methods that would be great

QT is kind of pointless if he’s already in the display tank with other fish.

He seems fine, but it’s better to video with full white lighting. It’s near impossible to spot irregularities under blues.

Much better. I’m definitely not the resident expert, but I don’t see any cause for concern.
