Pump help???

ok, so I moved to a new house, and I didnt set up the pond...however i did take it with me.

I am not digging until spring, so I have a really beastly pump just sitting around. This is the pump (the 1900 gph) Water Garden Pumps, Dual-Discharge Little Giant Pond Pumps | Pondliner.com

I was trying to figure out why it was not recommended for saltwater? The last pump I used said the same thing, but I used it as well..the screws didnt rust or anything. it was for a quarantine tank, not my reefs...so if it did rust it probably just killed ich ;o

lol, well if anyone has access to more info than I have found involving this pump with marine use i would be super happy. it is a super pump for ponds, so i thought if i could utilize it in a tank, i can pretty much throw together a whole extra tank in one evening with all my extra gear. if not, i will see about trading it for a saltwater pump...

Hello Warlock,

There can be a few reasons that pumps are not rated for use in saltwater. These are generalized possibilities, so maybe someone can chime in in regards to this particular pump. First, the seals and impellers on pumps that are okay for use in freshwater can often not withstand the harsher conditions of saltwater over time. Also, they worry about things like sand that can damage the pump. Another concern might be that the pumps are not tested for that environment, and as such they can't guarantee that it will work/hold up.

Thanks, I figured it was one of those reasons, if it was just the sand issue, I would just use it because my sump is clean as a whistle :) I didnt call in time today, so I will hit them up in the morning and ask! I have had bad experiences with these pumps burning out in less than 6 months on a freshwater setup. I would assume they would fare worse on a saltwater setup.

really? that sucks. i had it on my pond all year with massive amounts of algae getting in it and it would just eat the stuff up and shoot it out the pipe.

i did contact franklin electric! Thanks marine Depot....they said it has stainless steel in it...thus rusting will be my reason for not using. lame...now i have to find somene who will trade me for it haha...broke as a joke this month
