I was recently given a 1/4 hp chiller, but I cannot find any information on what brand/make it is. I know I'll need to hook it up to a pump, and I'm wondering if there's a general rule of thumb for what size pump per HP of chiller, or if I'll just have to experiment with it to get it to work. Thanks!

Chillers have a big range of flow rate recommendations. For example a 1/4hp JBJ chiller is rated 480-1920 GPH. Depending on the temperature you're shooting for, you can experiment on the flow rate that gives you better result. I am using a 1/5HP and I am pushing around 900gph thru it, it can bring down the temp from 79 to 78 in 25 minutes, if I max out the pump it becomes 35 minutes. I also tried lower flow and it's above 30 minutes.

Can you show a picture? I use this as my guide. So 7-20 GPM for a 1/4 HP unit. i avoid the lower end because the chiller chamber can ice up; upper end is probably limited by plumbing size.
