Sooooo im new to this quarantine game im not one to buy many fish. anyways, i have a 20 gallon all in one nuvo that im using for quarantine. i had two fancy clown fish with ich in there, they where swimming doing there little dance and eating.

Yesterday i tested the water and found it had 0.25 ppm nitrites so i added a bit of prime and i quickly did a water change roughly 80-90% water. i matched salinity and same salt. nitrites where now at 0.

i added a half dose to copper to get it back up and today i was going to measure and put copper back to the 0.5 concentration. (it was at 0.2-0.3) buuut when i got back from work both fish where dead =(. nitrites 0 ammonia 0 nitrates 5. copper 0.3 ish.
did i change too much water? should i wait to add the copper back next time or what am i missing. this is the second time this happens i feel terrible.......

I know from my experience I think you may have changed too much water then tried to catch the copper dose up. Are you also doing hypo?

Prime makes copper toxic.

woah! really?? maybe thats what killed it

i added prime both times i tried quarantining fish............. ima use paraguard only this time and just do water change if i see ammonia or nitrites

Prime makes copper toxic.

This is your culprit. No need to use prime for nitrates, nitrates aren’t particularly harmful to fish. Ammonia is a different story.

Copper is the best course of action.

Sorry for your loss :(

Yup, prime + cupramine/copper = dead fish. I’ve switched completely to CP.
