I don’t see why not!Can you cut a Quartz sleeve for a UV light to length ?
wonder about a dremel with cutting wheel?I don’t see why not!
The last few I’ve managed to clumsily break didn’t exhibit any kind of temper…
I doubt the likes of a glass bottle cutting tool would be reliable enough to do it repeatibly with the thin wall of the tube… best bet would probably be a wet cut diamond abrasive saw!
Iffy… you could try it? Or, scoring and breaking… but, I do worry about the tube just shattering!wonder about a dremel with cutting wheel?
I don't know the shattering is more than likely going to happen with vibration alone I think. It has become a moot point now as I have found that the greedy aquarium manufacturers are asking 60-80 dollars US for one. I bought an an entire UV light for 55 Canadian, and get a spare bulb at that and 2 spare bulbs are around 30 , The math is simple. The issue is is that it is meant for a Rodi system with quarter inch inlet and outlet. I will have to try to get a pump that will produce the proper GPH. FUN FUN. But Thanks for the thoughts. The reason for the enquiry is I don't have much faith in being to be able to clean it after it being used in salt water under intense light.Iffy… you could try it? Or, scoring and breaking… but, I do worry about the tube just shattering!
Maybe if you had a fixture to slowly spin the quartz tube and hold the dremel steady so you could cleanly grind the radius straight?
How many watts does it draw? The issue is is that it is meant for a Rodi system with quarter inch inlet and outlet
It is meant to have 1/4 push connect fittings which as you know go from quarter id to 1/4 od however has 1/4 inch npt so am going to get proper fittings for this. I was wondering about pump size due to restrictions ( it is rated .5 to 1 GPH 5 watts by the way } it happens I have a Danner pump for a project from Paul B that I have still to solve because it uses a pump in a " pull " application. Try to prime that ha ha to put detritus on a filter membrane. Paul is a guy that challenges you since he is a mad scientist. Anyway they make a pump that is 150 so good to know since finding info about the Aqua UV is top secret and I was hoping it would apply uses a 150. I will get it set up and due a test into a measured pail. I read you need 150-225 for algae, and 25-75 for doing DNA reproductive destruction. ( sounds easier than a vasectomy ). Keep you informed. Hope 5 watts is enough but really what does it matter 5 or 15 ? Seriously would like to know what you think these " Geek " people ( the Manufacturer make larger ones meant for a home. Need one for my existing 90 plus 40 sump set upHow many watts does it draw?
And, Is it 1/4” NPT? Or 1/4” push connect?
— 1/4” NPT can handle around 150gph! (Using a pump >150gph, to get some pressure forcing water through the restrictive fitting!)
5w is pretty small! It is meant to have 1/4 push connect fittings which as you know go from quarter id to 1/4 od however has 1/4 inch npt so am going to get proper fittings for this. The exposer is posted for Aquarium results but always aware of false news . It is in line now with my Rodi and has been working well. I want to use one the same or as I said a larger one if necessary for my 65 new build which I have no sump. Never considered heat but if it works on my Rodi which is a watts 25 GPD system should it not be OK ? I have seen charts for the Danner pump which deals with lift. That is a fact that I have to think about since the pump I right now thinking has to be in my main display lift the water 20 inches over the top drop down 20 inches enter the UV light and go another 20 back up int the display the UV would be mounted vertically. So Thoughts? As to Pauls design which is for a filter to deal with Diatoms ( which I dont have ) fingers crossed is for I will look for such pumps . Here is a picture of my set up of pauls design so far just trying to solve the priming problem, and when the powder is added it clumps at the bottom instead of coating the filter. But that is another project which if you want chime in more5w is pretty small!
The .5-1gph measurement is likely for parasite sterilization in drinking water; VERY long exposure time!
I think of using a ~150-250gph pump to feed this UV, especially if there’s any well height involved! (Small pumps don’t do vertical lifting very well unless you get something specialized)…
Flow rates through a UV aren’t set in stone, they vary significantly based on the general sterilizer design, and wattage of the lamp! — too little flow for a given wattage/design can overheat the UV sterilizer!
— Usually you want to find the manufacturer’s minimum required flow rate for that specific UV, and consider that your minimum…
What sized tank is this running on?
Re. Using a pump in a suction application; have you considered diaphragm vacuum pumps, or self-priming lift pumps with rubberized impellers?

I do know Lifegard Aquatics has a 15W (@120v) UV sterilizer which is rated for 100G; presumably for unicellular organisms only, max flow rate: 250gph!I want to use one the same or as I said a larger one if necessary for my 65 new build which I have no sump.
This will be fine! A 5W lamp isn’t making very much heat either!Never considered heat but if it works on my Rodi which is a watts 25 GPD system should it not be OK ?
Lift height (aka: well, head) is only measured from the submerged pump’s chamber water line to the highest point in the plumbing! — it is a measure of how far vertically water is being lifted out of water! That is a fact that I have to think about since the pump I right now thinking has to be in my main display lift the water 20 inches over the top drop down 20 inches enter the UV light and go another 20 back up int the display the UV would be mounted vertically. I don’t see a pic (maybe it’s been edited since I loaded the thread last) but I can imagine what’s going on there! — would it be possible to incorporate magnetic stirring, or a circulation pump plumbed in/out of the housing itself? Here is a picture of my set up of pauls design so far just trying to solve the priming problem, and when the powder is added it clumps at the bottom instead of coating the filter. But that is another project which if you want chime in more
