Question why growth like this??

Hello take a look at the photo. As you can see the coral seems to be growing around the rock it’s placed on. Is this normal or should it be growing more out then down?

Is that a chalice?. I only had one. It did the same and grow outward.
You can see it in this pic on the other side of the tank.

I believe it is a chalice. I bought is as a small frag. It seems to be growing down wrapping around the rock.
