Hello just looking for ID on this guy that tried to sneak in.
Is this a nassarius a whelk or something else. Would hate to kill it for no reason.

Looks like a nassarius to me. If it buries itself immediately, its a nassarius. If it doesn't and stays out on the rocks and and glass, it's something else. The tail looks alot like a nassarius snail's with the little forked part. His rostrum or snout also doesn't have the blotchly look of a whelk and it's super long like a nassarius's.

Quick note, this guy is fast.
Mine are pretty fast too, for snails. They also leave behind the mother of all slime trails.

Thanks guys was leaning this way but better safe to ask then just plop it in. Plus I only have jumbo tongan nassarius and the comparison wasn't working too well..

Just a quick update. I was really leaning towards this being a nassarius but he sure wasn't acting like one. Completely avoided the sand and kept hunting down the larger snails and climbing onto them.
I tossed it out.
