I've bought multiple air pumps and they have been by far the loudest part of my whole system. I've tried isolation pads but it doesn't seem to make a difference. Does anyone have suggestions for an efficient, quality air pump that is also decently quiet or is this just the nature of the beast?

You probably already thought of this, or it just doesn’t flat out work for what you got going.

BUT(and there is always a but lol)

Why not just run a wave maker to break up the top water?

If you have to run an air pump... I've had luck with the Whisper line. A big part can be the air stone you're using so might be worth looking into something that makes smaller bubbles.

I like Schego and Luft pumps for their reliability. They aren't quiet though. Placing a muffler between the pump and the terminus of the airline helps a lot. Putting the pump into a box also helps.

I use the cheap hygger piezoelectric pumps. They are completely silent save for the bubbling. I would assume they are much less durable than your typical diaphragm/cam pump but if you need continuity of service buy 3 and replace as needed…will also say they generate less air and have poor pressure but it should be sufficient for phyto. I use them to add extra air to my qt tank.

Depends how much air you looking for. The USB pumps at Aquarium CO OP are amazing for how small they are and really quite.

I've had good luck with the tetra whisper air pump, very quiet. My pod culture crashed after a couple of months but my phyto has been doing well. Just keep up on sanitizing
