hi. I am new to this reef2reef and have a question about my new to me radion gen1 light. My friend gave it to me with some problem with it. Here is what I have done.
1. Cleaned inside out completely. It was jungle inside the fan.
2. Downloaded ecotech manager connection and able to connect to the light
3. Reset to manufacture setting, upgraded software, disable the buttons.
4. Scheduled to the time that I wanted.
5. Light turned on as schedule but came home I found light was off before the schedule with red light blinking.
I have read some issue and it could be either fan or power supply problem.
I called ecotech it was quoted that could be hardware (board) issue and cost about 250$ (new board) and 100-150 for a used one. Tbh, I wouldn't spend that much money for just a board , since I can get a used whole light for about the same price. Any thoughts to fix the problem. Im handy and replace power supply and change out the fan myself. Tia. TD

Welcome to Reef2Reef!

My first thought is that it should be cheap and easy to change out the fan. Wouldn't hurt to try that.

If you have a volt meter you should be able to test the power supply yourself. You just have to look at the ratings printed on the various pieces of equipment and see if the incoming/outgoing voltages match up.

Thank you Brew. Is that the fan same as one of those computer fan?
I will try to troubleshoot that power supply. Ty

I would expect it to be a computer fan. If you have it apart you need to see if it has a 3 or 4 pin connection and get measurements so a replacement fan will fit. Shouldn't be to hard.

One thing I noticed that, even the light is off, the fan is still running. Is this normal for radion lights?

I can't speak specifically about Radions but it is normal for most LED's. Fans typically run based on temperature and it takes awhile after the lights turn off for the temperature to drop below the fan setpoint. On some light fixtures the fan doesn't start until after the lights have been on a few minutes as the heat builds up. Other light fixtures have a parallel contact where the fan runs if the lights are on "or" the temperature is above a setpoint.

I saw that an inductor and a capacitor connected in between fan and power source. Do you know, those have to be there? I just did a bypass those components and the light is still on, but fan won't run. Any idea?

I have 3 gen1 radions that all had the fans fail leaving the red light blinking. All were bought used and ecotech sent me replacement fans for free.

Odds are that they are part of a filter circuit and that they would be required to make the fans work.

First I want to say thank you to Brew for helping me out on this issue. Here is few things updated.
1. Ordered a new fan on amazon with same size, voltage and amp.
2. Swapped in with old one. Take no time at all.
3. Put heat shrink tubes on wires to make it look professional.
4. Run the light with max power to see if it's turned off. 4 hours later Luckily, it's still running and fan runs quietly impressive with no noise.

That is great! Glad it worked for you!
